The Quantitative Analysis of Vessels in Cancer Tissue from Stomach and Colo-rectum

Abstract
The quantitative histomorphological analysis of vessels in the cancer tissue from 49 human stomachs and 13 human Colo-rectums have been done and the results have been compared with those of the normal by using the volumetric analytical method of Chalkley.
1. In stomach cancer arterial density is decreased in cancer tissue while normal density is observed in transitional tissue. It is, however, markedly increased in adjacent normal tissue.
Venous density is generally increased throughout, especially in the adjacent normal tissue.
2. There appears to be no appreciable difference in vascular density when different types of cancer are compared.
3. In the group with cancer confined only to the stomach the arterial density in the cancer tissue is heavier than in the group with metastasis. On the other hand the arterial density in the transitional tissue and also in the adjacent normal tissue is heavier in the group with metastasis. Venous density is about the same in both groups when cancer tissue itself is examined but is increased in transitional and probably in adjacent normal tissue in the group with metastasis.
4. The cancer tissue in colon cancer is not different from the cancer tissue in stomach cancer regarding the arterial density but shows decreased density when colonic cancer tissue is compared with normal colon tissue. Venous density is also decreased in the cancer tissue. Arterial density in transitional tissue is increased when compared with cancer tissue but is decreased when compared with normal colon tissue. Venous density in transitional tissue is more increased than in cancer tissue but shows no considerable difference when compared with normal colon tissue. Both arterial and venous density is markedly increased in adjacent normal colon tissue.
